Estate planning refers to the process of setting up various legal vehicles and protections to safely manage your estate after your death.
Generally, an estate plan will consist of four major elements:
- Last Will and Testament
- Healthcare Power of Attorney and Advance Medical Directive (“Living Will”)
- Financial Power of Attorney
- Trust or Similar Financial Vehicle
When you plan your estate, the attorney or financial advisor you hire will plan out each of these elements in a way that best suits your specific needs and wishes.
