The M-1 Visa is a type of student visa especially for immigrants that would like to come to the United States to attend a vocational school.
A vocational school is different from a college or university. It is more like a trade school because it allows students to learn technical skills for a particular job.
With an M-1 Student Visa, you will be able to come to the U.S. for a year to complete your training. During this time, you may leave the U.S. and return as many times as you would like.
Another advantage of the M-1 Student Visa is that your spouse and children can obtain M-2 visas to come to the U.S. with you.
Am I Eligible for the M-1 Student Visa?
The M-1 Student Visa is typically intended for individuals that plan on participating in a job-related training program in the U.S. This does not include language training programs or academic programs.
To qualify for the M-1 Visa, you must:
- Enroll full-time in a vocational program approved by the Student and Exchange Visitors Program (SEVP)
- Be financially able to pay the full cost of school
- Read, speak and write English
- Plan to return to your home country after your vocational program is over
How Do I Apply for the M-1 Student Visa?
To apply for the M-1 Student Visa, you should first complete Form DS-160, Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application. Once you have received confirmation that your application was accepted, the next step is to schedule an interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country.
The U.S. Embassy or Consulate will provide you with information about your interview and the final steps for finalizing your application.
